As I sit here tonight, I have decided to start a blog about my pregnancy and our sweet baby boy's journey with Spina Bifida. I will rewind a bit and tell you a little bit about myself and the beginning of my pregnancy.
My DH(Webb) and I have been married for about a year and a half, but have been together for 8 years. We knew soon after we were married that we would want to start trying for a family before too long. Little did we know that we would have a problem with getting pregnant. We then decided that we would be more aggressive in trying, since my Dr. told us that it would be very hard for us to get pregnant. Well several long months later here we are pregnant with a wonderful little boy!! We are so excited to meet our son.
My pregnancy thus far has been very easy on me. I did not have any morning sickness and as far as I stayed away from chicken all was well!! BTW I am just now at 23 weeks able to start eating some chicken! The first part of my pregnancy was also very uneventful, I had several ultrasounds, including the NT scan where everything looked perfect!! We also found out the sex of our baby at the NT scan at 12 weeks 6 days!! I was able to have a lot of ultrasounds, bc I am an OB nurse and work at a Women's Hospital!! This was somewhat bitter sweet for me. At one of my weekly ultrasounds at work is where we found out our baby has Spina Bifida. I was 17w4d. The tech saw some things that looked very alarming to her, but she did not say anything to me(bc she can't), but I could tell that something was wrong by the way she was acting. Several hours later the High Risk Perinatologist was on my floor and asked to see me in the conference room. When I saw him my heart sank!! I knew right then something was terribly wrong. This is when he explained that my precious baby has Spina Bifida. I was in shock. It felt like a terrible nightmare and that I was going to wake up any moment. I also had to call my DH and tell him over the phone(He couldn't actually understand a word that I was saying, bc I has bawling, but came straigt to my work, where I told him everything). That was on a Friday afternoon and on Monday morning we went to the high risk Dr. office for a very long(hour and a half ultrasound and 156 pictures) where they confirmed it. Although this is not news that you want to hear we are glad to find out that the lesion is very low, which means it hopefully is not affecting as many nerves. We also know that he does not have cleft lip of palate or club feet which can all be associated with Spina Bifida.
As for Webb and I we are trying to stay positive and learn as much about Spina Bifida as possible. We have accepted that this is our son and that he has been given to us for a special purpose. We can not wait to meet him and take care of him!! I will try and update as often as possible, esp. when we recieve new news on Baby Carter!!
